Auch die in Flugzeugen eingesetzte Soft- und Hardware ist nicht vor Fehlern gefeit. So ging am 14. November 1990 der Absturz einer Alitalia-Maschine bei Zürich auf ein defektes Instrumentenlandesystem zurück. Am 7. Oktober 2008 war eine Maschine des Qantas-Flugs 72 von Singapur nach Perth unterwegs - als die Maschine plötzlich in den Sturzflug überging und nur durch das Eingreifen des Piloten vor einem Crash bewahrt wurde. Die Ursache: ein fehlerhaft arbeitender Prozessor. Im Fall Santa-Bárbara-Airlines-Flug 518 sorgte dagegen die Nachlässigkeit der Piloten für den Ausfall eines Navigationssystems.
