Rachel Bailey und Janet Scott sind Detectives bei der Polizei von Manchester. Rachel ist äußerst temperamentvoll, weswegen sie im Dienst wie auch im Privaten manchmal aneckt. Janet ist verheiratet und hat zwei Töchter. Allerdings steckt sie in einer Affäre mit einem Arbeitskollegen, was im Job für Unruhe sorgt: Das Team soll den Mord an zwei Männern aufklären, die offenbar gefoltert wurden. Janet streitet sich außerdem mit ihrem Mann und Rachel muss sich um ihren frisch aus dem Knast entlassenen Bruder kümmern.
