Rachel Bailey und Janet Scott sind Detectives bei der Polizei von Manchester. Rachel ist äußerst temperamentvoll, weswegen sie im Dienst wie auch im Privaten manchmal aneckt. Janet ist verheiratet und hat zwei Töchter. Allerdings steckt sie in einer Affäre mit einem Arbeitskollegen, was im Job für Unruhe sorgt: Durch die Mordermittlungen im sind vier Verdächtige identifiziert und verhaftet worden. Doch die Männer schweigen hartnäckig. Janet muss damit zurechtkommen, dass Details aus ihrem Privatleben bekannt werden.
